# A Profound Sickness at the Core of Western Society

## An Illusion Of Protection: The Pandemic, The ‘Criminal’ Government And
Public Distrust of The Media

### by Media Lens

May 18, 2020

> _Any notion that the UK government actually considers that its primary
responsibility is to protect the health and security of the country’s
population ought to have been demolished in 2020. The appalling death toll
that continues to mount during the coronavirus pandemic is largely rooted, not
merely in government ‘incompetence’, but in criminal dereliction of its core
duties in a supposedly democratic society. _

> ### The UK has the highest death toll in Europe, and the second highest in
the world (the US has the highest). On May 12, the death toll from official UK
figures exceeded 40,000 for the first time, including almost 10,000 care home
residents. A study by academics at the London School of Economics estimates
that the actual death toll in care homes is, in fact, double the official
figure: more than 22,000.

>> _Cardiology doesn’t expire when people die of heart attacks. Just so, no
one should expect that when a man dies of the corona virus, or hundreds or
thousands of men, the sociology of their pre-existing health, race, ethnicity,
income, education, ideology – in short, their class in the old- fashioned
meaning of the word — goes belly up at the same time. For understanding and
prediction, sociology will always trump epidemiology — the basic reproductive
ratio R0 of Covid-19 might run from 3 to 9, but the R0 of class struggle is
many times more virulent. _

>

>
>

>

>

>> It is therefore surprising that so many pundits, even the Russia-hate
specialist Anne Applebaum, think to publish an interpretation of the sociology
of the plague of ancient Athens, circa 430 BC; and taking Thucydides as their
source, give lectures on how much the European and American societies can
learn from him on Covid-19, but have failed to learn to date. At the same time
as they depend on Thucydides for their lessons, they ignore the very first of
his – that was his dismissal of the source and cause of the plague among the
foreign enemies of the ancient Athenians. In other words, Thucydides wouldn’t
be blaming China and Russia for Covid-19 now any more than he blamed the
Spartans then.

shut-downs, others dare not venture out, or allow potentially infected people

most vitally, age. For elders, especially those in care home, Covid has been
more plague than pandemic.

where care homes, and state supported healthcare are not an option for the

situation in those countries where governments embrace neoliberal economic
doctrine and care little for those at the bottom of the class and economic
spectrum. In India, after more than six weeks of rigidly enforced lockdown,
food and medicine supplies, and the ability for internally displaced migrant
workers to get home, are priority concerns; as is getting in this year’s

>>>> Huobi Charity was first established in late January in response to the
coronavirus epidemic that swept through Wuhan and other regions of China. In
the midst of the outbreak, Huobi established its charitable arm and committed

>>>> Despite a global medical supply shortage, a volunteer team of Huobi

from over 90 domestic and international OEM suppliers. In total, Huobi Charity
donated 1,000 oximeters, 2,000 infrared thermometers, 53,830 protective suits,
130,340 medical masks, 1.2 million pairs of medical gloves, 6,000 pairs of
shoe covers, 15 tons of disinfection liquid, and 8 tons of medical alcohol
directly to over 135 hospitals and community healthcare centers.

Welcome to Gorilla Radio\'s
post-Covid-19 outbreak broadcast; not LIVE from the basement of the Student
Union Building at the University of Victoria, but taped live-to-Skype in my
home (ahem) studio. BUT, and it IS an enormous but, we\'re still heard at
101.9FM in Victoria, and at CFUV.ca everywhere else.

>>>> If you haven\'t heard Vladimir Putin invented Covid-19 yet you likely will
soon, if you follow the Western corporate press.

>>>> I\'m being only slightly facetious; in the, mainly American, press Russia,
(reduced now to a mere Putin pseudonym) is in turn responsible for: The
outcomes in French and Italian elections, Brexit, the Ukraine civil war and
Crimea\'s secession, assassinating still-living journalists, and attempting to
murder a former KGB double-agent, once released from Russia jail and now held
incommunicado by Britain, dividing the United States along racial lines, and
of course crowning Donald Trump Idiot King of America.

allegations against \"Putin\'s\" Russia: lots of media smoke with little

mining, shipping, insurance, food trade, and business policy.

> Helmer’s book titles include: ‘The Deadly Simple Mechanics of Society’,
‘The Jackal’s Wedding – American Power, Arab Revolt’, (co-authored with
Claudia Wright) the political memoir, ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About
Russia’, and his latest, ‘Skripal in Prison’.

little to slowdown America\'s belligerence towards its perceived enemies in

by Nicolás Maduro to undermine the United States. You couldn\'t dream this
stuff up; except when you could.

He\'s spent years observing the effects of Canadian mining operators on the
lives and lands of the people of Central America. From his first human rights
delegation with Rights Action to Guatemala, through Honduras, to take
testimony from the family and compadres of murdered activist, Berta Caceres,
to his latest sojourn with The Asociation de Trabajadores del Campo to witness
Nicaragua\'s resistance to El Norte\'s pernicious efforts to undermine its
socialist evolution, Kay is all too familiar with the dark forces threatening
peasant and indigenous communities in the countries of our southern
neighbours.

first, John Helmer and the West\'s trouble with Russia.

Today,
as Pestilence astride its white horse stalks the World ready to scythe
humanity down to size, it seems fitting we ponder our society, ourselves, and
our priorities to know best what and who to save before the end of all else.
Serendipitously, my first guest undertook just such a sorting task, before the
dread Covid-19 cocked its ugly head into our collective consciousness,
questioning the legitimacy of privilege and daring suggest meritocracy has
little to do with the ordering of our social hierarchy.

politicians through peaceful, direct action. The latest of Engler\'s eleven
books, \'HOU$E of MIRRORS: Justin Trudeau\'s Foreign Policy\' questions the

delusion that Canadians are _\"a benevolent force in the world\"_ despite ample
evidence to the contrary.
